Did your mother ever tell you ‘a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips'? If so, you're not alone, but it's something that you've got to firmly push from your mind on any holiday to the Czech Republic. Enjoy the feast that is Czech food, and get acquainted with just how tasty pork, dumplings and cabbage can be!
I'm serious. This is not some tongue in cheek piece dripping with sarcasm, but more so a tongue in Czech portion, dripping with gravy, cream or butter. The only problem for me was that I first got acquainted with Czech cuisine on a hen night in Prague. This is not the ideal introduction! Be warned that hen nights Prague are perhaps not the best time to sample traditional Czech favourites, as your heart won't be in it as you'll be thinking more about your waistline and fitting into your bridal or bridesmaid's dress. Czech cuisine is not for the faint-hearted or the calorie counters, but it goes remarkably well with beer! Come to think of it, maybe it's better for stag weekends than it is for hen weekends, but in the interest of equality, let's continue with some mouth-watering favourites regardless!
I'd recommend svickova na smetane as an essential dish to try on a holiday in the Czech Republic or Prague stag parties, as it's a delicious beef dish topped with gravy and cream. My personal favourite is smazeny syr, a to-die-for (not literally!) fried cheese snack that has me salivating just at the thought of it! Don't feel restricted to staple trio of roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut, there's also an unbeatable Czech dish with succulent roast duck… dumplings… and sauerkraut. Well you can't win them all! Forget your diet, toast to your health, and truly live on the wild side in Prague!
